Council to secure more homes for at-risk tenants in Mayo
THE government has approved a €325 million funding package for 2025 to help local authorities, including Mayo County Council, purchase homes from landlords looking to sell, ensuring tenants at risk of homelessness can remain in their homes.
Minister of State Alan Dillon has welcomed the move, highlighting its critical role in tackling housing insecurity in Mayo and beyond.
“This is a lifeline for families and individuals who might otherwise face eviction and emergency accommodation,” Minister Dillon said. “With an extra €265 million allocated today, councils can step in, buy properties, and keep people in their homes.”
The Second Hand Acquisitions Programme, part of the Housing for All plan, now has a record €325 million available in 2025 to target:
• Tenant in situ acquisitions, preventing vulnerable tenants from losing their homes.
• Older persons and people with disabilities, ensuring secure housing for those with additional needs.
• Exits from emergency accommodation, helping families move into permanent homes.
• Buy and renew acquisitions, tackling vacancy and revitalising communities.
Minister Dillon emphasised that new mandatory eligibility criteria will ensure this funding is directed to those most in need, including tenants supported by HAP (Housing Assistance Payment) and RAS (Rental Accommodation Scheme) who are at risk of eviction.
“This funding is about real homes for real people, keeping families together, protecting older residents, and providing stability for those who need it most,” he added.
“Mayo County Council now has more resources to secure housing and prevent homelessness. This is a government that is taking action.”
With housing a key priority, today’s announcement marks another step in delivering security, stability and solutions for households across Ireland, he added.
