€1.8m for Mayo village's active travel plan on N60 roadway

Minister of State Alan Dillon has announced announce the allocation of €1.8 million for the implementation of safety measures and active travel plans in N60 Breaffy Village.

This funding is part of the government’s 2025 capital investment in active travel and green infrastructure, which includes a total allocation of €4.6 million for Greenway and Active Travel projects across Mayo.

The N60 Breaffy active travel scheme aims to deliver safety improvement measures on the N60 and integrate with broader plans for the provision of active travel facilities between Castlebar and Claremorris.

The plans include a 4.25 km walking and cycle track starting from the IDA Business and Technology Park on the N60 Breaffy Road roundabout, passing through Kilkenny Cross and Breaffy Village.

The Part 8 planning for the scheme has been adopted by members of Castlebar Municipal District.

Minister Dillon emphasised the urgency and importance of this project to the Breaffy community.

He stated: "I have highlighted previously the critical need for swift consideration of funding to enable this project to proceed through the public procurement process.

"The funding allocated today will support the acquisition of land necessary for the construction and provision of active travel and safety measures."

Minister Dillon added: "I have championed this project since becoming a TD, working closely with local councillors to ensure its progress.

"The active travel scheme will also see significant improvements at the drop-off and pick-up points at Breaffy National School.

"I will continue to work with Mayo County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to ensure adequate funding is secured in the future.

"This will guarantee that the tendering and construction phases can proceed without delay.

"The core priorities for this scheme are to improve road safety for all users, particularly vulnerable road users, provide an attractive facility well integrated with the surrounding environment for recreational and tourism use, and connect key nodes in the area, such as the village centre, Breaffy GAA club, housing developments, post office, national school, and Breaffy House hotel."
