Minister's tribute to former Mayo councillor on his passing

The death has occurred of Christy Garrett, Ballina Road, Crossmolina, and formerly of Rakestreet, Crossmolina.

A former elected member of Mayo County Council, he died peacefully at Mayo University Hospital in the loving arms of his family.

In a tribute, the Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary stated: “I am deeply saddened at the news of the passing of Christy Garrett, who served as a Fianna Fáil member of Mayo County Council from 1979 to 1985.

"Christy, following in the footsteps of his father, the late Senator Jack Garrett, was a very proud Crossmolina and Mayo man, who worked tirelessly for his community and for the Fianna Fáil party.

"He was very approachable and committed to his role as councillor and to the community that he represented.

"He will be be sadly missed by all who knew him and who worked with him.

"On behalf of Siobhan and I, I extend our condolences to Christy’s wife Mary, daughters Marie, Trish and Sheila, son John, his beloved grandchildren, brothers and sisters. May he rest in eternal peace.”

Christy is survived by his wife and best friend of Mary, daughters Marie, Trish, Sheila, son John, grandchildren John, Liam, Lisa, Conor, Fionán and Daithí, brothers John and Noel, and sisters Rosemary, Lilly and Carmel.

Father-in-law of John, Culan and Karen, he is also deeply missed by his brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and his large circle of friends.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved family on their loss.

He was predeceased by his parents Jack and Lilly, brother Mickey and niece Aisling.

Reposing at Hiney's Funeral Home, Crossmolina, this evening (Wednesday) from 5 until 7 p.m.

Requiem Mass on Thursday at 12 noon in St Tiernan's Church, Crossmolina, with burial afterwards in Crossmolina Cemetery.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.
