Mayo Young Sports Stars: Always ready to lend a helping hand

A competitive swimmer in his own right, with all that that entails in terms of dedication and training, 17-year-old Lachlan Doyle started volunteering at Castlebar Swimming Club when he was just 14.

At the time the club was looking for swimmers to help in the water while they were running their Learn to Swim programme.

From there, Lachlan gradually progressed from helping in the water to teaching at pool side, and enrolled with Swim Ireland to achieve his Level 1 Swimming Teacher Award.

Not happy to be helping out for one day’s teaching, Lachlan then volunteered to take on a second day of teaching when the club found themselves short of a swim teacher.

He helps out in other spheres too, including fundraising, hosting galas for younger member, and assisting Mayo Sports Partnership with the Swim for a Mile events each year – all in conjunction with his training and school studies.

Lachlan's dedication to his club as a volunteer at such a young age has earned him a Connaught Telegraph Mayo Young Sports Stars Award, which will be presented at a gala ceremony in Breaffy House Resort, Castlebar, tomorrow (Friday, March 7).
