UFC 313: The toughest assignment yet for Alex Pereira
Michael Bolton
UFC Light-heavyweight champion Alex Pereira faces his toughest title defence yet against Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 313.
Pereira has risen to superstardom in MMA, with his devastating power overwhelming for most opponents. His most recent title defence was at UFC 307, where he knocked out Khalil Rountree in the fourth round.
This fight has been long anticipated, and Ankalaev has thoroughly earned his opportunity. Undefeated since 2018, the Russian fighter has patiently waited for his title shot, with his last victory coming at UFC 308 against Alexander Rakic.
Considered the most well-rounded fighter in the division, Ankalaev will likely rely on his wrestling, where he holds a clear advantage over Pereira.
However, since every fight starts standing, Ankalaev must first withstand Pereira's power and aggressive leg kicks, which could disrupt his rhythm.
In Ankalaev's previous title opportunity, he struggled with former champion Jan Blachowicz’s leg kicks at UFC 282, resulting in a majority draw.
If Ankalaev can survive Pereira’s early striking and take the champion down, a new champion could be crowned. Conversely, if Pereira can maintain the fight standing, he remains the favourite.
In the co-main event at UFC 313, one of 2023’s standout matchups returns as Justin Gaethje faces Rafael Fiziev again, 18 months after their first meeting.
Gaethje won their initial bout by majority decision at UFC 286 in London, but both fighters have faced challenges since.
Gaethje subsequently won the BMF belt with a head-kick knockout of Dustin Poirier before suffering a brutal knockout defeat in the final moments against Max Holloway at UFC 300.
Fiziev has not fought since sustaining a serious injury against Mateusz Gamrot in September 2023. Initially, Gaethje was set to face Dan Hooker, but an injury to the New Zealander prompted this rematch.
The critical question entering Saturday’s bout is whether either fighter remains at their peak. Gaethje has endured intense battles, including their first encounter, and was knocked out cold by Holloway.
For Fiziev, returning from an 18-month injury layoff, particularly against the division’s hardest hitter, presents significant challenges. Expect heavy leg kicks from both men, making this potentially the night's most thrilling fight.
The main card also features more lightweight action, with Mauricio Ruffy aiming to continue his winning streak against King Green.
Additionally, Jalian Turner will compete against Inacio Bahamondes, who has claimed victory in five of his last six fights.
