Proud awards for two outstanding young Mayo sports stars

A leading light in the Mayo world of equestrianism and an emerging talent in the arena of Gaelic football have been feted as the two outstanding Young Sports Stars of the Year.

At a gala event hosted by The Connaught Telegraph at Breaffy House Resort to recognise the county's finest sporting exponents under the age of 23, Katie Nallon, Knockmore, and Niall Coggins, Crossmolina Deel Rovers, were chosen as the supreme winners after their respective memorable seasons of success.

Katie was presented with the Melissa Patterson Memorial Cup as the Best Young Sportswoman while Niall hoisted the Darragh Doherty Perpetual Cup as the Best Young Sportsman.

They were both very popular and worthy winners in a strong and glittering field of young achievers.

Katie's highlight of the past year was capturing the prestigious Irish Masters title, one of the biggest prizes of her challenging sport.

In another clear indication of her wonderful talent, she was selected to represent Ireland at a number of international meetings where she competed with distinction as well as gaining enormous experience.

During one of her international assignments, she helped her country capture the Nations Cup in Belgium, defeating favourites The Netherlands and Germany.

Katie was also selected on the Irish team which took part in the Tri-Nations Cup in South Africa, an elite event that demanded tremendous concentration and stamina.

She is certainly a name to watch closely in the future.

Niall, widely regarded as one of the finest emerging GAA talents in the county, enjoyed a breakthrough season with Crossmolina Deel Rovers.

He was a central figure in the club's success in the Mayo Intermediate Football Championship series, defeating Moy Davitts in the decider following a replay.

Niall further underlined his quality and potential by exercising an influential role in his club's subsequent Connacht and All-Ireland title triumphs during a year he will never forget.

Because of the consistently high standard of his performances, he is expected to accomplish further glory in the years ahead.
