"A major issue is the lack of consistency in how applications are being handled."

'Mayo storm victims deserve real support, not red tape' - Lawless

Mayo Aontú TD Paul Lawless has slammed the confusing and inconsistent roll-out of the government’s Humanitarian Assistance Scheme following Storm Eowyn, saying many victims are being let down when they need help the most.

The Knock-based representative elaborated: “When this scheme was announced, people were led to believe that support would be immediate and accessible.

"Instead, we are seeing inconsistent payments, with some receiving as little as €10, while others get €100 or €200 with no clear explanation.

"A major issue is the lack of consistency in how applications are being handled.

“Some people are asked for receipts, while others are not. One woman was even told that if she couldn’t produce receipts within 10 days, her case would be closed.

"When the scheme was announced it wasn’t made clear that people needed to keep receipts. Citizens information details how they should be included where available.

“It’s incredibly frustrating for people who were relying on this scheme to make up for some of the financial hardships they experienced in the aftermath of the storm.

"The inconsistency in the administration of the scheme is causing huge frustration.

"For example, many people have received refusal letters stating food and clothing is not included, despite the fact that ‘food’ and ‘clothing’ are listed on the application form.”

To get urgent clarity on this scheme, Deputy Lawless has submitted a parliamentary question, asking the government to outline the rules of eligibility and the criteria needed to qualify for support.

“People affected by Storm Éowyn need real assistance, not a bureaucratic nightmare.

"We need immediate clarity on the process of applying for humanitarian assistance.”
