Top Mayo club face wait before home FAI Cup clash

Waterford Villa intend appealing the FAI decision that resulted in the club being eliminated from this season’s FAI Junior Cup following the re-instatement of Castlebar Celtic, the Waterford News and Star is reporting.

The 2022 winners of the competition played Celtic on February 16 and won 3-0 but the Mayo side lodged an appeal in the aftermath of the game.

Their objection centered on Villa fielding a player in the game who had played in the League of Ireland after the commencement of this season’s FAI Junior Cup in contravention to the competition's rules.

An appeal was heard by the FAI last Friday and they found in favour of Castlebar Celtic, meaning that they would take Villa’s place in the quarter-final and have a home time against Galway side Salthill Devon later this month.

However, that tie is now set for a further delay with Villa set to appeal against the FAI’s findings.
