AFTER six years of planning and fundraising the sod has been officially turned today on the new Charlestown-based East Mayo AC new six-lane floodlit 200-metre running track.

The amenity has a 5G astro in the centre, long jump, throwing area and cross-country training layout.

A special ceremony took place at the new state-of-the-art facility.

The large attendance included Canon Tommy Johnson, who performed the sod turning, Councillor Gerry Murray and Councillor Patsy O’Brien, Mayo County Council area representative Padraig Flanagan, members of Charlestown AC and East Mayo Special Olympics, local business people, as well as the children from St Attracta’s National School, whom were welcomed by the chairperson of Charlestown AC, Gemma Higgins.

Ms. Higgins said that this major project, which was first started in 2019, will transform athletics for current, Special Olympians and stars of the future.

Said Ms. Higgins: “East Mayo AC, which is located in Charlestown, was founded in 2019 with the principal aim of providing athletics opportunities in a safe, fun and inclusive environment for all ages and abilities.

"We place a strong emphasis on community and have been extremely active over the past five years, establishing our club as one of the main sporting pillars in the community whilst also creating strong relationships with the other sporting clubs and community groups in east Mayo.

"Our club is proud to be affilliated with Athletics Ireland and Special Olympics Ireland.”

The chairperson went on to say that over the past five years the club has continued to grow and now has 250 members.

“Our committee, volunteer coaches and athletes have all worked hard over the past five years to build a dynamic and reputable club.

"It is their enthusiasm, energy and commitment that has allowed our club to grow so quickly. With over 250 members we cater for all.

“Children from the age of 5 to 10 start out in our Little Athletics programme and then from 10 upwards in our juvenile athletics programmes with track and field and cross-country training.

"We also have a well-established adult running group that provides various challenges and initiatives each year.

“Our Special Olympics programme has members from all over Mayo and Sligo and caters for children aged 4-18 with special needs.

“This week, work will commence on our six-lane foodlit 200m synthetic grass running track, which will include a 5g astro in the centre, a long jump, a throwing area, and a new cross-country training layout.

"The development is described as a major coup for our community and members and a major boost for a new generation of athletes within a dedicated facility.

“This €400,000 investment in an athletics hub (funded by our own fundraising to date, €119,000 Sports Capital Investment and Community Finance Ireland) will undoubtedly attract more participants, foster local talent and signal a turning point in athletics within our community.

“At this time, we have a shortfall in excess of €150,000 and are hopeful that our Lip Sync Battle which will be held on Saturday, March 29, and Sponsor a Metre of Track campaign will offset this cost. Our committee and volunteers are building a legacy.

“With all of this in mind, we are asking for your support for our Lip Sync battles night which will be held in the Park Hotel, Kiltimagh.

"The funds from this event will go directly to the development of this new major project. It is going to be a fun filled night with numerous acts performing and providing an amazing nights entertainment and this will be the largest fundraising event in our history.

"So, support your act and get your tickets now for a night not to be missed.

“Finally, I would like to thank everyone for attending this sod turning ceremony today and for all your great support up to now.

"We look forward to your continued support for this huge project which will make a massive difference to all our young people now and in the future.”
