Social media storm engulfs Mayo influencer following controversy

Social media personality Garron Noone has found himself at the centre of a national controversy after appearing to express support for former UFC fighter Conor McGregor's views following his White House visit.

The Ballina native, described by some as a "national treasure" for his talents as both a musician and comedian, has since decided to step away from social media platforms after facing significant backlash.

The controversy has drawn reactions from across the political spectrum, with Mayo's Aontú deputy Paul Lawless coming to Noone's defence.

"It's unbelievable to think that someone could share a very middle of the road take on immigration and receive such a heightened level of abuse," said Deputy Lawless.

"Garron, like myself, is from Mayo and I can assure you that his take on immigration is shared by so many of my constituents throughout the county."

Deputy Lawless further stated: “In order to have a functioning democracy and ensure the best policy is implemented we need to encourage healthy debate across the political spectrum.

"In reality we see extremist views take hold when people are pushed to the fringes and feel as though they are locked out of society and unable to express their views in public.

“Every single one of us is entitled to share our opinion on a topic without facing thousands of insulting messages and abusive comments.

"It’s a horrible thing to go through and I hope Garron has the support of friends and family during this time.

"People nationwide are backing him. Freedom of speech is the cornerstone of democracy.

"Cancel culture is a virus that stifles free expression and aims to silence those who dare to speak their minds—it must come to an end."

Sinn Féin's David Cullinane also expressed support for Noone, though he described the influencer's comments as "clumsy."

The situation has sparked wider debate about the boundaries of public discourse, particularly on hot-button issues like immigration policy.

Meanwhile, The "All Ireland Whingers" podcast dedicated their latest episode to discussing whether Noone's views represent mainstream opinion in Ireland.

The podcast also explores potential candidates for the upcoming presidential election, as speculation grows about who might enter the race for the Áras in the coming months.
