Big numbers of stock at Mayo mart

BALLA Mart saw a very big sale on Saturday, with more than 100 additional lots than the previous week.

Stores are getting dearer - up on average €1/kg on the same sale last year.

Bullocks 300kg to 400kg averaged €4.35/kg, stores 400kg to 500kg averaged €4.26/kg, while heavier bullocks 500kg plus averaged €4.12/kg.

A CHX bullock born May ’24 and weighing 370kg made €2,080 (€5.62/kg) for a farmer from Kilmeena, Westport, while he had another CHX, 310kg, that made €1,860.

A farmer from Kiltimagh did really well with his heavier bullocks - one weighing 670kg made €3,000 (€4.48/kg) while another Charolais bullock, 565kg, was sold for €2,740 (€4.85/kg).

A cracking LMX bullock weighing 750kg made €3,100 for a farmer from Killasser, going to a Northern factory buyer.

A fine yard of heifers saw nice light stock dearer again this week, with strong demand from farmers. Stores were a mighty trade, with the best making over €4.50+/kg.

Lighter store heifers 300kg to 400kg averaged €4.02/kg, heifers 400kg to 500kg averaged €4.22/kg, while heifers 500kg plus averaged €4.14/kg.

A smashing little 335kg CHX store heifer made €1,890 (€5.64/kg), sold by a Claremorris farmer. Another CHX born March ’24 and weighing 390kg was sold for €2,350 by another farmer from the Claremorris area.

A farmer from Charlestown, who had some super heavy heifers, saw an 815kg CHX selling for €3,530 - going north, while another 690kg heifer sold for €3,080.

Cows and breeding bulls were sold in ring three, with over 170 on offer this week. There was a fine trade with cows 500kg plus up again on last week and averaging €3.62/kg and the tops getting between €4-€4.50/kg.

A serious December ’12 (12-year-old) dry cow weighing 955kg made €3,860 for a farmer from Midfield.

Another dry cow weighing 725kg made €3,400 for a farmer from Kiltimagh, bought by another Northern factory buyer.
