Mediator needed to address Dáil row - Mayo TD
Mayo TD Paul Lawless is calling for a mediator to be brought in after the row that erupted between the opposition and government in the Dáil today.
“Today's scenes in the Dáil were shambolic,” he commented, “and I couldn’t help but think about how this constant back-and-forth is delaying the real work needed for the thousands of people across the country who are struggling.
“Parents are still waiting for their children’s assessments of need, families are worried about affording their next grocery bill, and carers remain in limbo, waiting for the long-promised removal of the means test.”
Deputy Lawless said the vote was carried today, but it is definitely not the end of the tension between the government and opposition.
“We in Aontú want to see an independent mediator brought in to deal with this issue so we can get back to working for our constituents,” he said.
“Having TDs who support the government sitting with the opposition is misleading and disingenuous. The government knows this and has pushed ahead regardless of the impact this will have on the democratic process.”
Deputy Lawless said his main goal is to see this disruption brought to an end so that we might get to work and be a successful vehicle for challenging the government when it comes to holding them and their pre-election promises to account.
“I've had enough of the theatrics and what I really want is to see the government deliver on the countless promises they made in the run up to the election.
“I’m committed to keeping the pressure on and ensuring accountability.”
