Mixed reaction to possible N5 junction solution in Mayo

THERE has been a mixed reaction to a suggestion that a road be closed in Turlough to alleviate traffic concerns at a crossroads on the N5.

A stacking lane had been suggested at the Gortnafolla junction, where the Church of Ireland is located in Turlough. However, that's a non-runner as it's impossible to put one in without blocking traffic travelling on the N5.

A solution would be to close one lane - the road opposite the church leading towards Turlough, making that a cul-de-sac. Taking away one arm of the junction would significantly reduce safety concerns.

John Kearns from the Roads Design Office told Castlebar Municipal District councillors that TII wouldn't support anything at the junction until that access was closed.

Councillor Ger Deere felt it offered a good solution, not creating much inconvenience.

The measure wouldn't cost a fortune and it would save lives, noting the amount of accidents that have occurred at the junction.

A roundabout was queried by Councillor Michael Kilcoyne, but he was told TII wouldn't consider this an option.

Every option needs to be looked at before closing a road, said Councillor Blackie Gavin. This would send traffic down to the Horkan's junction, which is highly dangerous too, he pointed out.

Closing one in isolation might generate an amount of opposition, said Councillor Al McDonnell. He would go for all other available options if there were any.

The turn left off the N5 was used by people travelling to Turlough and Parke, Councillor Cyril Burke pointed out.

Another point for consideration was raised by Councillor Kilcoyne: Nearly half a million had been spent repairing a bridge on this link road and now there was a suggestion about closing it.

The presentation was made to councillors for discussion after they sought possible solutions to a number of traffic issues in the municipal district.
