Potential housing boost for north Mayo town as planning lodged

Crossmolina could see a substantial boost in its housing supply, with local developers John and Carina Craven lodging plans for a major residential project that could nearly double the number of homes built in the Ballina Municipal District in 2024.

The proposed development, submitted to Mayo County Council, encompasses 47 new homes at a site located on Mullenmore North and Knockalegan. The comprehensive plan includes a diverse mix of housing types, ranging from two-bedroom bungalows to four-bedroom two-story dwellings.

The housing mix is strategically designed to meet various housing needs, featuring six two-bedroom semi-detached bungalows, eleven three-bedroom detached bungalows, eight four-bedroom detached two-story homes, and twenty-two four-bedroom semi-detached two-story homes.

The application also proposes extensive plans for associated infrastructure. These include extended pedestrian and vehicular access, internal roads and footpaths, cycle and car parking, public and private amenities, comprehensive landscaping, and complete utility connections.

The Cravens are already making significant strides in addressing local housing needs. Construction is currently underway on a previously approved development of 37 homes located across from St. Tiernan's College and adjacent to this site.

The entire Ballina Municipal District completed just 57 homes in 2024. If approved, the Cravens' two developments would nearly double this figure, representing a significant contribution to the area's housing supply.

The planning application is now with Mayo County Council for review, with local residents and stakeholders keen to see how this proposal might help address housing demands in the north Mayo region.
