Leading Mayo referee makes retirement decision
Leading Mayo soccer referee Martin Halligan has announced his retirement from the sport after 24 years of dedicated service.
The Castlebar-based official took his decision after being advised by his surgeon that it is unsustainable for him to continue due to a back injury.
He stated: "I've had the privilege of being a referee over the past 24 years and I cherish the memories and friendships forged during that time.
"I've been fortunate enough to be involved in some truly memorable matches, including four Connacht Cup finals and one FAI Junior Cup semi-final.
"These experiences , and many others, have shaped me and enriched my life immeasurably.
"I extend my deepest gratitude to everybody I have had the pleasure of working with over the years - fellow referees, players, coaches and officials.
"Your support an camaraderie have meant the world to me. Thank you for making my time so rewarding and unforgettable."
In October 2020, he was elected treasurer of the National Council of the Irish Soccer Referee Society after previously serving in a number of roles, including assistant treasurer
He was subsequently bestowed with a Honourary Life Membership of the organisation.
