Mayo mart reports record numbers and increased prices
BALLA Mart saw record numbers and prices up again for this week's end of month Continental sale.
Bullocks 300kg to 400kg averaged €4.46/kg, stores 400kg to 500kg averaged €4.34/kg, while heavier bullocks 500kg averaged 4.45/kg.
A light CHX bullock born May ’24 and weighing just 270kg made €1,720 (€6.37/kg) for a local farmer from Balla while another LMX from his bunch weighing 325kg made €1,900.
A farmer from Kiltimagh did well with a 495kg bullock that made €2,620 (€5.29/kg), sold to a feedlot buyer from Donegal.
A heavier AAX bullock weighing 775kg made €3,640 for a farmer from Westport.
A fine yard of heifers saw nice light stock up in price again this week, with strong demand from farmers. Stores were a great trade, the best of which were making over €4.50 plus per kg and up by 30 cent per kg.
Lighter store heifers 300kg to 400kg averaged €4.33/kg, heifers 400kg to 500kg averaged €4.30/kg, and heifers 500kg plus averaged €4.44/kg
A smashing CHX store heifer weighing 295kg made €1,730, sold by a farmer from Ballyhaunis. Another 495kg BBX born April ’23 made €2,320 for farmer from Claremorris. A farmer from Snugboro had a super 715kg CHX heifer that was sold for €3,460 to a buyer from the North.
Good fat cows and strong bulls were a serious trade - up by €200 a head on last week and a better trade than the bullocks.
A serious June ’19 dry cow weighing 880kg made €4,000 for a farmer travelling all the way from Letterkenny in Co. Donegal - bought by a buyer from Co. Tyrone.
Another Charolais dry cow weighing 950kg made €4,280 (€4.51/kg) for a farmer from Westport.
There was a ‘tonner’ Charolais bull weighing 1,110kg that went on to make €4,560.
