Mayo minister implements new Jobseeker’s Pay-Related Benefit Scheme

THE New Jobseeker’s Pay-Related Benefit Scheme commences today, in what is a major reform of the social protection system in Ireland.

The scheme is being implemented by Dara Calleary, Minister for Social Protection, delivering on a key commitment in the Programme for Government.

Speaking on the commencement of the scheme, Minister Calleary said: “I'm delighted to welcome the New Jobseeker’s Pay-Related Benefit Scheme that commences today.

“We absolutely understand that if you lose a job, the sudden loss of income can be incredibly difficult to adjust to.

“The New Jobseeker’s Pay-Related Benefit Scheme is designed to help people during this period of uncertainty whilst they are seeking new employment.

“People with a strong work history can seek up to €450 if they lose their job.

“This is a commitment in the Programme for Government, and I am delighted to deliver on that commitment today.”

Added Minister Calleary: “We have also committed to exploring other schemes where this model will work and we are beginning some work on that.”

The new scheme replaces the existing Jobseeker’s Benefit for people who become fully unemployed and who meet the contribution conditions for the scheme.

It is open to applications from people whose first day of unemployment is on or after March 31, 2025. Applications need to be made within six weeks of a person losing their job.
