Celebrating World Autism Month in west Mayo town

WESTPORT Autism Friendly Town is celebrating World Autism Month with two wonderful family events. And the Mall bridge in Westport is also being lit up to mark the occasion.

Westport Autism Friendly Town is partnering with Westport House to mark World Autism Month with a special community walk on Sunday, April 6, at 12 p.m.

The walk will commence at the Church Street entrance to Westport House, uniting families, friends and supporters in a powerful demonstration of solidarity. Participants will enjoy a scenic route through the historic grounds, concluding at the playground beside Gracy’s, where tea and coffee will be served.

More than just a walk, this event is an opportunity to promote understanding and celebrate neurodiversity. Nature walks have been shown to offer significant therapeutic benefits, particularly for individuals on the autism spectrum - helping to reduce anxiety, regulate sensory input, and promote emotional well-being.

Participants are encouraged to wear colourful clothes where possible, and show their support for autism inclusion.

Next week, the Golf Open Championship Trophy - the Claret Jug - will be making its way to Westport on Tuesday, April 8. Westport Golf Club have invited members of the autistic community, their family and friends to join in the fun at its family evening in the presence of one of the most iconic sports trophies in the world.

Activities include fun competitions on the putting green, the pitch & putt course, the driving range and the Golf Ireland golf zone. Visitors will also be able to enjoy Westport Golf Club’s pop-up museum and learn about the victories of McIlroy, McGinley and Maguire on the shores of Clew Bay.

A very special evening is guaranteed for all with a unique opportunity to take a picture with the Claret Jug on the 18th fairway. The event takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8.

And finally, from this week Westport’s Mall bridge will be lit up to mark World Autism Month. Westport Autism Friendly Town has expressed its thanks to Christy Hyland for making this happen.
