Repairs to Mayo pilgrim path

REPAIR work on one of Ireland's pilgrimage routes is progressing.

The Tóchar Phádraig Trail follows the footsteps of Saint Patrick as he made his way to Croagh Patrick.

Works to restore and improve the route are underway, with Ballintubber Abbey posting an update on its social media.

This week essential repairs are being carried out on the bogland sections to ensure a safer and more accessible path for all who walk the sacred route.

The abbey reported: “Our team is working hard to prepare the trail for our first group pilgrimage walk on Easter Monday, and we look forward to welcoming pilgrims on this journey of faith, reflection, and heritage.”

The work has been funded through the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS) by South West Mayo Development Company, supporting the preservation of historic trails for generations to come.

In an exciting week for the abbey, next Monday (April 7) at 11 a.m., Ballintubber Abbey will launch its new website, booking system, and strategy document (2025 – 2028).

This special event will unveil a vision for the future, including exciting plans for the cultural and heritage visitor centre project.

Ministers Dara Calleary and Alan Dillon will be among the guests for the launch as the historic abbey celebrates this next chapter.
