Mayo cannot afford to keep handing silverware to Galway - Brady

Former Mayo midfielder David Brady spoke about the growing urgency within the county to end their wait for a Connacht title, insisting that another year of ceding silverware to Galway would be a step too far.

Mayo, who last lifted the Nestor Cup in 2021, are bidding to avoid a fourth consecutive year without a provincial title.

Speaking to “Off The Ball”, Brady said the hunger among supporters to reclaim Connacht honours is more pronounced than ever.

“A lot of Mayo people are only talking about one thing this year,” Brady said. “I love rivalry, but by Jesus, we can’t go another four years in a row handing a cup to Galway. It’s on the line — a Connacht Championship.”

Kevin McStay’s side made it past Sligo in the Connacht quarter-final over the weekend and will now face Leitrim in a semi-final clash in two weeks’ time. Galway, meanwhile, ensured safe passage to the last four after seeing off New York at Gaelic Park last night.

Brady, who was a key figure for Mayo during the late 1990s and early 2000s, believes a provincial title is vital for the team’s confidence as they look to build towards the All-Ireland series.

“A Connacht Championship is a must from a Mayo perspective,” he added.
