Mayo boxer gears up for big fight in National Stadium
Promising professional boxer Eoghan Lavin is set to take another significant step in his career as he faces experienced veteran southpaw Jan Balog on Saturday (April 12) in the National Stadium, Dublin.
Mayo native Lavin, who currently holds an undefeated record of 4-0, will look to extend his winning streak to 5-0 at the prestigious 'Night of Champions' event.
The 22-year-old has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting prospects in the UK and Ireland, and this upcoming fight marks a new challenge in his development.
Aware of the significance of this moment, Lavin shared his excitement for the opportunity to return to the National Stadium, where he enjoyed many successful nights as an amateur.
“It’s great to get the opportunity to box at the National Stadium again,” he said. “This year I want to continue to stay active, and this is a great chance to show off the work I’ve been doing in the gym with Ant (Anthony Crolla). I’m excited to take on my first southpaw as a professional, which is always a key part of any prospect’s apprenticeship.”
Lavin’s rise in the professional boxing ranks has been rapid, particularly after announcing his deal with Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren last year. His entrance into the professional scene made waves, not only due to the high-profile partnership with Warren but also because of his management team, which includes Anthony Joshua’s 258 Management and renowned Donegal-based sports agent David McGinley.
“Eoghan has been a dream client to work with from the start,” said McGinley. “He’s ambitious and has the hunger to be successful. That showed when he made the mature decision to move to the UK to serve his apprenticeship and develop under the world-class environment at Anthony Crolla’s gym. He’s invested in himself both financially and personally, and we’re seeing the just rewards from that in his performances and progression.”
Lavin’s boxing journey has been marked by his willingness to challenge himself early in his career. Despite being a young prospect, he has never shied away from tough opponents, and his performances so far have garnered attention within the Queensberry Promotions stable.
His victories in cities like London, Belfast, Birmingham, Waterford, and now Dublin have cemented his reputation as a fighter who is always ready to rise to the occasion.
Frank Warren and his team have been impressed by Lavin’s ability to handle challenges and continue to perform at a high level. Lavin has shown an ability to dispatch tough opponents with confidence, often outperforming other highly touted prospects in the same weight class.
As 2025 continues to unfold, Lavin is eager to make his mark as one of the top prospects in the UK. He has expressed gratitude for the unwavering support from his home county of Mayo and beyond, noting the role it plays in keeping him motivated.
“The support in Mayo and beyond has been amazing! It’s genuinely so motivating to know I have such loyal and ardent support, and I just want to keep pushing on now,” Lavin said. “Hopefully, we get the chance to bring big boxing nights to Mayo for a title – that’s the dream!”
