Eleven lines on maps for proposed Mayo village bypass causing 'mayhem'

ELEVEN lines on a consultation map for a proposed bypass of Cong village is at the root of local concern about the project.

With a number of possible routes absolutely never going to have been built - including one that runs through a supermarket - councillors want to see them taken off the maps. Then discussion can start around two or three possibilities for the route, they say.

Councillors Michael Burke and Damien Ryan both spoke about the project at Monday's meeting of Mayo County Council.

On the line through the local supermarket, Councillor Burke said he had asked was he reading it right and was told yes, but it won't happen.

“Why put it in,” he asked.

Having 11 lines on a map that went out to consultation was in his opinion a waste of money and it was causing 'mayhem'.

The sooner they got it down to two or three options, then, with the local community, they could look at what might work, he stated.

Councillor Ryan agreed there are a number of routes that should not have featured in what has gone out to public consultation as they will never happen and are just causing anxiety.

Public consultation remains open until April 18, director of services Tom Gilligan told the meeting, who said he heard some of the concerns at a public presentation day.

A number of environmental assessment will have to be carried out as well, he explained, and it will be the end of the year or early in 2026 before there's a final recommended route.

Mr. Gilligan said the process is the same as they have had for other major schemes and if people have concerns, they should send on those details.
