'Rats big as cats' as trees cut in Mayo county town left to rot
RATS as big as cats are hiding out in timber cut down at the Mall in Castlebar and left going rotten, according to a local councillor.
Councillor Blackie Gavin hit out at a meeting of Mayo County Council that the timber was left to rot instead of being distributed to the elderly in the town.
The council, he said, had knocked trees on the Mall. He had asked for it to be cut up and given to older people 'but the council won't do that'.
“All it is is a hiding place for rats,” he stated.
It's going rotten and is a health hazard, said Councillor Gavin.
“There's rats as big as cats coming up out of it.”
There's lots of timber down around the county following Storm Éowyn, Councillor Chris Maxwell noted. And the common sense way of getting rid of it was to cut it up and distribute it.
It would tidy up the countryside and ease fuel poverty, he said.
