Council to receive €15,000 to commemorate local Mayo history
FUNDING of €15,000 for Mayo County Council for commemorative events will help honour our local history, said Minister of State Alan Dillon.
Minister Dillon has warmly welcomed the news of a grant allocation of €15,000 for Mayo County Council to be used supporting commemorative events in 2025.
“We are an open-minded and forward focused community, but now more than ever it’s important to reflect on our history, things that happened locally that impacted on people, and are important to commemorate,” he said.
“If we don’t keep these memories of our shared history alive, they risk being lost forever. We must commemorate them, we owe it to our ancestors, and to future generations too.
“That’s why I appreciate Minister Patrick O’Donovan ensuring Mayo County Council has this funding now to develop and support community-led commemorative initiatives to mark the centenaries of locally significant historical events that took place here.
“The funding may also be used to mark other significant anniversaries and associated themes. This year, €5,000 from this overall allocation is provided to support artistic and creative initiatives.”
Minister Dillon continued: “I am particularly proud of the success of Mayo County Council in organising events such as Mayo Day, which has brought our community together across the world and celebrates or rich heritage.
“Local authorities have always been key stakeholders in the delivery of commemorative events. I look forward to seeing what Mayo County Council plans, in light of our local history, experience, and expertise.”
