Mayo community group launches cutting-edge solution to weed control

Castlebar Tidy Towns has announced the launch of its new Foamstream Machine, a cutting-edge solution for effective weed control, urban cleaning and sanitation.

This machine, funded under the Department of the Environment's Community Climate Action Programme Fund and administered through Mayo County Council, represents a significant investment in sustainable community upkeep, costing just over €30,000 including its initial foam supply.

The Foamstream Machine is versatile in its applications, offering solutions for weed control, moss and algae management, graffiti and gum removal, and general urban cleaning of surfaces such as pavements.

Its environmentally friendly foam, made from 100% biodegradable plant oils and sugars, is applied through a hose and handheld lance, eliminating the need for herbicides.

This ensures safe use even near watercourses and provides visible, instant results, reducing the need for ongoing management and protective gear.

“This new machine will be a huge asset to Castlebar and will enhance our efforts to maintain a clean and attractive environment.

"Its eco-friendly operation aligns with our commitment to sustainability and reducing chemical use,” said Alan Mee, chairperson of Castlebar Tidy Towns.

“We are incredibly grateful to Mayo County Council for supporting our application to the Department of the Environment & Climate Action.”

The Foamstream Machine will soon be seen in action across Castlebar, assisting Mayo County Council and Tidy Towns on various cleaning and maintenance projects.

Its cost-effectiveness, combined with the ability to deliver immediate and visible results, makes it an ideal choice for a range of community needs.

Castlebar Tidy Towns believes this innovative tool will not only help maintain the town’s appearance but also contribute to long-term sustainability and environmental protection.
