Bullock at Mayo mart sells for €5,160
A bullock at Balla Mart on Saturday set a top price of over €5,000.
The heavy Aberdeen Angus Cross, which weighed in at 1,125kg, was sold by a farmer from Hollymount for €5,160.
The sale overall saw store bullocks 300kg to 400kg remaining on par with last week. Quality was not as good, which always happens as the year progresses, but still the tops were a serious trade, making in the region of €4.50-€5/kg.
Bullocks 300kg to 400kg averaged €4.35/kg, those 400kg to 500kg averaged €4.47/kg, while heavier bullocks 500kg plus averaged €3.33/kg.
There was a great selection of heavy cattle and they got great buying, with the tops making €4.40/kg for Northern buyers.
A LMX bullock born May ’23 and weighing 480kg made €2,480 for a farmer from Claremorris, going to a buyer from Dublin.
The owner of the 1,125kg AAX sold for €5,160 also had another heavy 1,015kg bullock that made €4,720, with the majority of the heavy bullocks going to Northern factory buyers.
There was good demand from feeders and feedlot buyers for heifers, with prices very similar to last week for stores.
Lighter store heifers 300kg to 400kg averaged €4.13/kg, heifers 400kg to 500kg averaged €4.07/kg, while those 500kg plus averaged €3.89/kg.
One smashing BBX heifer weighing 735kg was sold for €3,250, with another LMX weighing 610kg making €3,020 - sold for breeding.
Cows and breeding bulls were a good trade. There were just over 120 dry cows and 30 springers on offer this week and only two missed in the whole sale.
Weanling sales continues this week with the Easter sale this Tuesday evening (April 22).
