Slips and trips cost council in Mayo over €800,000 last year

MAYO County Council paid out €803,842 in settlements for slips and trips last year.

The bill for pothole damage to cars came to €4,572.

The figures were revealed after Councillor Patsy O'Brien tabled a motion calling on the local authority to make known all settlements made to the public for 2024 for slips, trips and falls, as well as damage to tyres caused by potholes.

There were 18 footpaths, slips and trips settlements made last year amounting to just over €800,000. The total number of pothole damage cases settled was 35.

In relation to the total figure for the 2024 settlements for footpaths, slips and trips, a settlement in one case, which was significant, resulted in the particularly high figure for the year.

It was substantially higher than previous years, which averaged €373,000 per annum, Councillor O'Brien was told.
