Lime celebrates reaching 100,000 rides in Mayo towns

Lime – the world’s leading shared e-scooter and e-bike operator – is celebrating reaching a milestone 100,000 trips in Castlebar and Westport following high levels of usage with local residents and visitors.

The news is part of the ongoing success and positive reception to Lime’s service in Castlebar, which became the first Irish town to welcome Lime’s shared e-bikes in September 2022. The scheme was originally launched as a 12-month pilot scheme, but was extended due to its popularity. It was launched in Westport in 2023.

Lime offers a green and alternative transport option in the town for commuting, leisure and tourism. Its popularity means that over 25,000 residents and visitors in Castlebar and Westport have now used Lime since it launched, a figure that is 25% higher than the towns’ combined population of 20,000 people. They have collectively cycled over 150,000 kilometres via Lime – the equivalent distance of three times around the world.

Lizzy Day, operations manager for the UK and Ireland at Lime, commented: “Since launching in Castlebar and Westport, residents and visitors have truly embraced Lime’s e-bikes as an alternative and green mode of transport to replace car journeys under five miles. Usage has continued to grow and we’re hopeful that we’ll be seeing yet another record-breaking summer in the coming months.

“We look forward to continuing to work with Mayo County Council to increase trips further and reduce carbon emissions. It’s clear that Irish towns and cities are increasingly adopting micromobility, and we have ambitions to launch our services in other parts of Ireland in the near future.”

To use the e-bikes in both towns, riders need to pay an initial unlock fee of €1 with a charge of 19 cent per minute for the rest of the ride. All Lime e-bikes rides must be left in dedicated parking zones to ensure that the bikes are parked responsibly, and avoid pavement obstructions.
