Mayo villagers voice opposition at public meeting to bypass proposals
Residents of Cong have voiced stern opposition to controversial proposals to build a bypass to divert heavy traffic from the village.
They met at the local Crossroads Centre last night to register their concerns over the infrastructure.
A committee has been appointed to formally meet with officials of Mayo County Council in respect of the issue.
The fact there are 11 different lines on a consultation maps for the proposed route is at the centre of community anxiety.
Ballinrobe Councillor Michael Burke told the April meeting of Mayo County Council that having 11 lines on a map had evoked 'mayhem' over the matter.
One of the lines run through the middle of a local supermarket, he pointed out.
A further public meeting is planned to take place in Cong next month after talks with council officials.
