Mayo island celebrating official opening of sports facilities today
MAYO Minister of State Alan Dillon is travelling to Clare Island today (Saturday) to officially open the island’s brand new changing facilities at the local sports ground, marking a historic milestone for the community and its proud GAA tradition.
The celebration will see ladies’ and men’s football matches kicking off from 12 noon. Minister Dillon will perform the official opening ceremony at 2 p.m.
Speaking ahead of the event, Minister Dillon said: “I’m really looking forward to returning to Clare Island for what promises to be a brilliant day of celebration.
“This is a significant moment in the island’s sporting and community history. The new facilities are a testament to the hard work and spirit of everyone involved with Clare Island GAA, a club that continues to punch well above its weight both on and off the field.
“Having previously visited the island, I know how passionate the community is about sport and Gaelic games and the vital social benefit it brings. This was on full display when both the Clare Island ladies and men’s teams were victorious in the 2023 All-Island Football Championships, a remarkable achievement that brought great pride to the entire Mayo region.”
He added, “I’m especially looking forward to meeting with all the local community, volunteers, and those returning home for the occasion. So come along, this is their day, and it should be celebrated as such.”
