Revealed: How safe is the Mayo community in which you reside?

Crime levels recorded at 29 garda stations across the county over the past 12 months have been revealed. . .and they make worrying reading for many communities increasingly concerned over inadequate policing levels.

For the second consecutive year, the statistics cite a rise in rural crime compared to a decrease in incidents in major urban centres - apart from Ballina where there was a rise of 156 offences.

However, the county town of Castlebar recorded the highest number of incidents, 737 in all, albeit down from a high of 909 in 2019.

There were 82 incidents of assaults/threats last year in the town, 60 of criminal damage, 49 of fraud and 201 thefts, 183 public order offences as well as 40 drugs offences.

Other crimes registered by officers at Castlebar Garda Station include burglary (11), dangerous driving (35), robbery (3) and 'other' offences (73).

The statistics exclude homicides, sexual and most road traffic offences.

A breakdown of stations across the county is as follows.

Achill: A total of 13 offences. They included five assaults, three burglary, two criminal damage and one fraud.

Balla: Twenty-seven offences. There were three assaults last year, six burglary, four incidents of criminal damage, six public order, two of fraud and two dangerous driving.

Ballina: An increase from 256 to 512. There were 73 assaults/threats last year, 84 incidents of criminal damage, 25 of fraud, 118 thefts and 113 public order.

Ballindine: 29 offences, including seven assaults, five criminal damage, five thefts, two fraud and two drugs offences.

Ballinrobe: Rise in offences from 122 to 133. There were 22 assaults/threats last year, 17 incidents of criminal damage, 7 of fraud, 35 thefts, 15 public order, 16 drugs and 15 public order.

Ballycroy: Two offences, one assault and one public order.

Ballyhaunis: 128 offences, up from 111 in 2019. There were 25 assaults/threats, eight burglary, 24 criminal damage, 14 drugs, 11 fraud, 12 public order, 22 thefts and eight dangerous driving.

Bangor Erris: Drop in offences from 29 to 24 over past year. There were nine assaults/threats last year, six fraud, two burglary, one criminal damage and two thefts.

Belmullet: Decrease in offences from 12 to seven. There were three public order, one assault, one fraud and one theft.

Bonniconlon: Twelve offences, three assaults/threats, three burglary, three drugs, two criminal damage and one theft.

Castlebar: Drop in offences from 829 to 737. There were 82 assaults/threats last year, 60 incidents of criminal damage, 49 of fraud, 201 thefts, 40 drugs offences, 35 dangerous driving, 183 public order and three robbery.

Charlestown: A total of 65 incidents, including 13 assaults, six burglary, eight criminal damage, 11 dangerous driving, 10 fraud, one robbery and 11 thefts.

Claremorris: Decrease in offences from 183 to 155. There were 17 assaults/threats last year, 13 incidents of criminal damage, 53 thefts, 10 burglary, nine drugs, 13 fraud, eight dangerous driving and 27 public order.

Cong: Rise in offences from 18 to 19. They included five assaults/threats last year, six incidents of criminal damage, three thefts and two public order.

Crossmolina: A total of 39 incidents, including eight thefts, six fraud, six public order and three assaults/threats.

Foxford: Decrease in offences from 47 to 43. There were 10 assaults/threats, four criminal damage, nine dangerous driving, six fraud, three public order, one robbery.

Glenamoy: A total of 17 incidents, including five assaults, five fraud, two thefts, two dangerous driving and one pubic order.

Keel, Achill: Sixteen offences, including six assaults/threats, five thefts and one criminal damage.

Kilkelly: Twenty-seven offences, including five burglaries, five fraud, four thefts and two assaults.

Killala: A rise in offences from 29 to 38 offences, including 15 assaults, four burglary, seven public order, three criminal damage and two thefts.

Kilmaine: Ten offences, including three burglaries, three fraud and one theft.

Kiltimagh: Rise in offences from 54 to 54. They included 14 assaults/threats last year, 10 incidents of criminal damage, six burglaries, five thefts and eight public order.

Knock: A drop from 34 to 31. There were six assaults/threats last year, four burglaries, three incidents of criminal damage, four thefts, four fraud, three drug and four public order offences

Louisburgh: A drop in offences from 15 to 28. There were 11 assaults/threats last year, six incidents of criminal damage, six theft and two public order.

Newport: Increase in offences from 12 to 25. There were five assaults/threats last year, four fraud, three public order, three thefts, two criminal damage, two dangerous driving, one burglary and one dangerous driving.

Shrule: Fall in offences from 23 to 11. There were two assaults/threats last year, one burglary, one incidents of criminal damage, one thefts, two fraud and three public order.

Partry: A total of 30 offences, a rise from 21 in 2019. They included seven assaults, six burglaries, six fraud, four theftsand two public order.

Swinford: Drop in offences from 128 to 112. There were 27 assaults/threats last year, four burglaries, 21 incidents of criminal damage, 28 thefts, 11 public order, four fraud, three drugs and 10 dangerous driving.

Westport: Decrease in offences from 319 to 284. There were 63 assaults last year, 18 drugs offences, 34 incidents of criminal damage, three robberies, 38 thefts , 13 fraud and 91 public order.
